The State of Catechesis in Spain

Abstract

This article examines the state of catechesis in Spain on the basis of data concerning the activities of the Catholic Church and the guidelines issued by the Magisterium and the Spanish Episcopal Conference. Following an overview of the concept, nature, and historical development of catechesis, it explores its main areas of practice: childhood and adolescence, youth, adulthood, and the catechumenate. The article identifies signs of vitality, including the commitment of catechists, the renewal of Christian initiation pathways, and the development of training structures, alongside challenges related to the transmission of faith, the continuity of catechetical processes, and generational renewal. It also addresses the importance of catechisms, the formation of catechists, and cooperation between families, parishes, and schools. In light of Verbum Domini and Evangelii gaudium, particular emphasis is placed on the centrality of the Word of God and the need for kerygmatic, mystagogical, and missionary catechesis. Finally, the article advocates the renewal of catechetical practice through a community-based, integral approach inspired by the catechumenate.
