Abstract

This article offers a sociological reading of young people's circumstances based on Pope Francis's post-synodal apostolic exhortation Christus vivit, comparing its insights with sociological research and statistical data on Spanish youth. It first examines the main forms of suffering and vulnerability affecting young people, including social exclusion, violence, employment insecurity, and difficulties in personal and family relationships. It then identifies their positive capacities and aspirations, such as creativity, social commitment, the search for meaning, and the desire to develop meaningful life projects. The analysis focuses particularly on three issues: digital culture, migration, and different forms of abuse. To interpret these phenomena, the author draws on Manuel Castells's theory of the network society, Juan María González-Anleo's analysis of the selfie generation, and Zygmunt Bauman's concept of liquid modernity. The article also examines statistical evidence concerning youth unemployment, immigration, and religious attitudes. The study highlights both the opportunities and contradictions of contemporary society and emphasizes the need to understand young people from a perspective that recognizes their vulnerability as well as their active role in social and ecclesial life.
