Presentation of the Diocesan Directory for Catechesis: Pastoral Guidelines and Criteria for Catechesis and the Celebration of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation

Abstract

This text introduces the new Diocesan Directory for Catechesis of the Archdiocese of Zaragoza, “And He Preached the Word to Them” (Mk 2:2), which came into effect in January 2019 and replaced the previous directory issued in 1991. The document responds to the need to renew catechetical practice in the face of contemporary challenges to the transmission of faith and seeks to provide a common framework for Christian initiation and the celebration of its sacraments. The author outlines five key priorities: the vocational identity, spirituality, and formation of catechists; the communal dimension of catechesis; the central role of families and the awakening of faith; the adult catechumenate as a response to diverse journeys of faith; and the urgency of the first proclamation in a pluralistic and secularized society. The presentation also emphasizes the missionary character of parish communities and the directory’s role as an instrument of ongoing formation and pastoral renewal. It highlights the shared responsibility of the diocesan community for evangelization and accompaniment throughout the processes of Christian initiation.
