Abstract

This article examines catechesis within the evangelizing mission of the Church through an analysis of the first four chapters of the 2020 Directory for Catechesis. Following a twofold approach—revisiting the document's contents and identifying its main pastoral emphases—it explores Revelation and its transmission, the identity of catechesis, the vocation of the catechist, and catechist formation. The study highlights the leading role of the Holy Spirit in evangelization, the centrality of Jesus Christ and the kerygma, and the need for catechesis inspired by the catechumenate and characterized by a missionary and mystagogical orientation. It also emphasizes dialogue with cultures, mercy, personal accompaniment, and the transformation of Christian life. Regarding the catechist, the article presents the catechist as a witness to faith, teacher, mystagogue, companion, and educator within a Christian community responsible for transmitting the Gospel. Finally, it considers catechist formation as an ongoing and integral process encompassing human and Christian maturity, biblical and theological knowledge, pedagogical skills, and the ability to foster fraternal relationships. The study thus underscores the missionary renewal proposed by the Directory and its implications for catechetical practice and the formation of those entrusted with this ministry.
