The Process of Catechesis

Abstract

This article presents and examines the second part of the 2020 Directory for Catechesis, devoted to the catechetical process, through an analysis of chapters five to eight. It begins with an overview of the Directory's structure and purpose before exploring four fundamental dimensions: the pedagogy of faith, the Catechism of the Catholic Church as a reference for transmitting the content of faith, catechetical methodology, and catechesis across different stages and circumstances of life. The author highlights the inspiration provided by divine pedagogy, the centrality of Jesus Christ, the relationship between content and method, and the importance of human experience, memory, narrative and artistic languages, and digital tools. He also examines catechesis addressed to families, children, young people, adults, older people, persons with disabilities, and those experiencing vulnerability or social exclusion. By comparing the new Directory with the 1997 General Directory for Catechesis, the article identifies its principal innovations and pastoral challenges. Finally, it stresses the need to move beyond excessively school-based and sacrament-oriented models towards a missionary catechesis grounded in encounter, accompaniment, mercy, and the proclamation of Jesus Christ.
