Catechesis in the Particular Churches

Abstract

This article examines the third part of the 2020 Directory for Catechesis, devoted to catechesis in the particular Churches, and presents its main guidelines for renewing catechetical ministry. Drawing on the call to missionary conversion expressed in Evangelii gaudium, the author emphasizes the responsibility of the entire Christian community for transmitting the faith and the need to understand catechesis within the Church's broader evangelizing mission. The study considers the ministry of the Word, the role of the particular Church, and the different settings of catechesis, especially parishes, ecclesial movements and associations, and Catholic schools. It also addresses the challenges posed by contemporary cultural contexts, religious pluralism, ecumenical dialogue, digital culture, the relationship between faith and science, bioethics, ecological commitment, and the preferential option for the poor. Particular attention is given to the inculturation of faith, local catechisms, and the ecclesial bodies responsible for coordinating and promoting catechesis. Finally, the article highlights the importance of diocesan catechetical projects, the formation of catechists, and cooperation among different pastoral institutions in developing a missionary catechesis inspired by the catechumenate, centered on an encounter with Jesus Christ, and attentive to people's concrete circumstances.
