Abstract

This article reflects on the institution of the lay ministry of catechist through Pope Francis's apostolic letter Antiquum ministerium, promulgated in 2021. Through a series of pastoral and ecclesiological considerations, it examines the significance of this ministry within the renewal of the Church's evangelizing mission. First, it highlights the ministerial dimension of the Christian community and the continuity between catechetical services present since the origins of Christianity and their present institutional recognition. It explores the baptismal foundation of the ministry, its specifically lay character, and its distinction from ordained ministry, emphasizing the need to avoid all forms of clericalization. The article also addresses the responsibilities of instituted catechists in the initial proclamation of the Gospel, Christian initiation, accompaniment of catechumens, and ongoing formation of the faithful. Particular attention is given to episcopal discernment of candidates, their human and spiritual qualities, and the biblical, theological, pastoral, and pedagogical formation required for this stable ecclesial service. Finally, it emphasizes the responsibility of episcopal conferences and particular Churches for establishing formation pathways and criteria for institution, encouraging recognition and renewal of the catechists' vocation in the service of evangelization.
