A New Paradigm for Catechesis Today: Challenges and Prospects

Abstract

This article examines the paradigm shift affecting pastoral ministry and catechesis within the cultural and religious transformation of European societies. Moving from a sociological form of Christianity grounded in tradition and cultural belonging towards a faith embraced through personal choice and conviction, it argues for the need to move beyond a pastoral approach focused on preservation towards a missionary approach. In this context, catechesis is called to recover the centrality of the first proclamation and to develop the second proclamation as an opportunity to rediscover faith through significant events and transitions in human life. The author proposes three guiding principles for this renewal: fostering a welcoming experience of the Church, presenting faith as a grace that enriches human life, and offering a freely given witness that respects personal freedom. From this perspective, catechesis becomes a process of accompaniment in which the Christian community recognizes the prior action of the Holy Spirit and allows itself to be evangelized by those to whom it proclaims the Gospel.
