Catechesis, Education, and the Encounter with Jesus of Nazareth

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between catechesis, education, and the encounter with Jesus of Nazareth from a theological, hermeneutical, and pedagogical perspective, taking into account the anthropological and cultural transformations of contemporary society. The discussion is structured around three processes: understanding, rethinking, and reconstructing. First, it considers pluralism as a key to interpreting the current epochal change and argues for a reassessment of the assumptions underlying catechetical reflection and pastoral practice. Second, it proposes understanding faith and education as mutually implicated, so that human maturation and Christian growth develop together. This approach requires moving beyond catechetical models focused exclusively on doctrinal transmission and fostering participatory Christian communities as spaces of communication and shared learning. Finally, the article places the encounter with Jesus of Nazareth at the heart of catechetical renewal, emphasizing the Incarnation as the fundamental criterion for understanding revelation and Christian experience. The author highlights the credibility of revelation, the reasonableness of faith, and the salvific meaning of ecclesial tradition, and proposes three criteria for renewed catechesis: grounding in lived experience, the anthropological integration of faith, and coherence between Christian life and practice.
